Not convinced in investing in employee morale? Here’s your business case: When workers are happy, they are more productive.
A new study out of the University of Warwick examined 713 workers in four different situations. In three of the circumstances, there was some sort of happiness intervention – the workers were given a treat of some sort, like watching a funny movie, eating chocolate, or getting food and drink. Those who were given the treat were later 12% more efficient in completing a task given to them than those who did not receive an intervention.
In the fourth instance, the researchers measured productivity first and then again after participants experienced a real-life shock, such as a death or illness. Those who experienced the shock were less productive.
Morale matters. Making investments in monitoring and increasing employee happiness, engagement, and job satisfaction will result in a return in the bottom line.
